The T13 Roleplaying Game

Social Ordeals

Social Ordeals are how we track things like levels of friendship, enmity, first impressions, persuasion, lying through your teeth and getting away with it, and even emotional attacks and Psychological aspects of the interactions between Characters in the world. Often Characters that could be friends will be pitted against each other by circumstances of a Narrative (such as them being Rivals or Foils), or natural enemies may be forced to work together due to a common threat, but either way, eventually the Personalities and Geometries of the Characters may overcome these Narrative Problems and they will revert to form.

Impressions

In T13 we track character interactions via the use of a sliding scale that we call Impressions. When two Characters first meet they create an immediate Zeroth Impression. This Zeroth Impression is then modified by the Social Ordeal Rules during the Scene where they met to create the Character’s First Impressions of each other. Impressions are usually measured using the Social Ordeal Level scale.

As well as that First Impression, which Character's will usually keep, they will also have a Current Impression. This Current Impression can differ greatly from the First Impression, and can replace the First Impression if it is sustained for long enough. For example, while two Characters may have a First Impression that each other is “Someone to talk to” if one of them is a jerk during all their interactions, while the other is generally nice, then these Current Impressions may eventually change, with the Jerk finally deciding the other is actually Someone Interesting, while the other Character comes to think of the Jerk as well “A bit of a Jerk” (or something worse).

This occurs when the Current Impression is at least two or more levels above or below their First Impression, whatever that may be, for at least three Scenes where they interact.

Geometry and Zeroth Impressions

First Impressions in T13 are Character reactions to another Character and are governed initially by Character Geometries (note that each “Also Known As” alternative name that a Character has, will have its own Geometry. In some cases these Nominative forms will have completely different Geometries, but these names are all for the same person …)

Robert and Bob are the same person, but those who call him Robert (perhaps in work) see him as a Square, a hard-worker but pretty boring. his Friends see him as Bob or Rob depending when exactly they met him and as a Half-Moon, an intuitive type, or even as a bit Psychic (if Bob is more Undecagon), his family call him Bobby and see him as a risk-taking Pentagon, in his own mind he calls himself Robbie and sees himself as a Circle, a creative loner.

You should note that each Character has a number of Harmonics and Dissonant numbers that affect them personally. Robbie is Harmonic with Geometries 1, 3, 5, 6, 8, 10, 12, and 13, but Dissonant with 2, 4, 7, 9, and 11. This indicates that the Robbie persona may not get on too well with the Bob and Rob personas. This effect can be compounded the other way, but in this case does not, although you can see something occuring in Bob and Bobby where they are both Dissonant with each other. This can be used by the Yarn-Teller to create stories that pit “Robbie” against “Bob” or “Rob” somehow, or simply mix Bobby’s old school friends with Bob’s friends to highlight those differences. To really create some trouble and Stress for the Character invite all of his Friends and work colleagues to one party.

Geometries are more complicated than a simply Geometry, Characters also have a Soul Geometry (calculated by removing all the vowels from the name). Characters are drawn towards this Soul geometry, granting them a Success Level whenever they interact with them, and to that Geometry when they interact with them.

In addition to the main Geometry a Character also has a Facade that they maintain, which is calculated from the Character’s name with all the consonants removed. This Facade behaviour can be complicated with a Character maintaining a separate Facade to their normal Geometry and Soul Geometry, or their Facade may match their normal or Soul Geometry. We refer to the first as “Geometry Masking” and it often makes the Geometry that you are masking as uncomfortable (adding a Failure Level). However, those who Facade as a Geometry are drawn towards that Geometry and therefore that Geometry will have a Success Level affecting the Facading Character. This effectively complicates Zeroth Impressions, depending on the Character’s Geometry Masking.

In general, when dealing with Harmonics and Dissonants you deal with Impressions (what the Character thinks of a Character of that Geometry) and Reactions (what those of that Geometry think of the Character back). Positive Impressions and Reactions add Success Levels, negative Impressions and Reactions add Failure Levels instead.

You might notice notice that amongst the Harmonics and Dissonant Numbers there are some special numbers, such as Perfect Harmonics, Wolf Harmonics, Sustained Dissonants and Nemesis Dissonants. These have more profound Impressions and Reactions, that stack on top of the normal Dissonance or Harmony. It is actually

Harmonic Types
TypeDescriptionImpressionReaction
HarmonicHarmonic Numbers are other Geometries that have a generally positive interaction with this Geometry. When this Geometry meets one of their Harmonics they will generally view them favourably.10
PerfectPerfect Harmonic Numbers the Geometries that this Geometry are most attracted toward. Perfect Harmonies are sometimes described as being soul mates, but best friends, mentors and role-models may be Perfect Harmonics. When this Geometry meets their Perfect Harmonic, they will generally be friendly or trusting towards them. In Ordeals and Dice Tests, Rolling or Drawing a Perfect Harmonic can count as a Critical.42
WolfThe Wolf Harmonic is the one Harmonic that this particular Geometry does not mix well with. Something about the Wolf Harmonic number just doesn’t quite gel with this Geometry. When this Geometry meets their Wolf Harmonic, they will generally be unfavourable towards them.-2-1
DissonantDissonant Numbers clash. Geometries that are Dissonant with each other will generally have a worse time of it. When this Geometry meets one of their Dissonant Geometries they will generally view them unfavourably.-10
SustainedA Sustained Dissonant is a Dissonant that actually this Geometry is just fine with. Sure they may not be firm friends, but they can get along. When this Geometry meets their Sustained Dissonant they will generally be neutral or even favourable towards them.21
NemesisNemesis Dissonant Numbers are the absolute worst. Every time you meet one, they seem to be unpleasant, or smarmy, full of false charm. The Nemesis Dissonant may actually be a Nemesis, but more likely is just an unfriendly or just difficult to read person. When this Geometry meets their Nemesis Dissonant they will generally be unfriendly or antagonistic. In Ordeals and Dice Tests, rolling or Drawing a Nemesis Dissonant counts as a Fumble.-4-2

So let’s consider the various Roberts (we can simplify and decide which Bob, Rob or Robbie is turning up) meeting Mary. We can use impressions to see what Mary thinks of the different Roberts, and what Bob or Rob think of Robert, Bobby, etc. We can say for example that practically psychic Bob and more down-to-earth Rob each pick 11 and 2 respectively.

🤨 Cautious (-1) — The Character named to the left does not have a very high opinion of the Character named above, that they will usually explain as them just not getting on, but there are always some other reasons. Applied Modifiers: 0
Interval: Unison (+1)

Unison is the same note twice, as such it has no harmonics or dissonance, which gives it no power, and no emotional content. The relationship has a smoothness and peace to it, but has will and insistence too.

😖 Aversion (-7) — The Character named to the left really doesn't like the Character named above. They might keep this opinion to themselves mostly, but will occasionally be driven to comments. They will leave any event, location or situation, although not always quietly, rather than be around them.

This interval is a compound of at least one Octave and The Major-Second is a difference of a whole tone. This relationship is dissonant, a pain-filled torment, but has hints of stability, which gives it tension — a sense of longing and eagerness. • Mode: Chromatic

Chromatic Mode is not really a mode and includes all the tones as part of the scale. This means we use a subset to consider harmonic and dissonant.

Chromatic groups are everyone, the complete gamet of the world and its people, the whole multi-cultural society of not just humanity, but sapience across the Omniverse. No one is left out, and everyone is in, unless they choose to separate themselves off into their little bubbles, political parties, and smaller circles, cliques and clubs. Where, metaphorically speaking, they can find more harmony away from the dissonant chaos created by every voice singing their own song at once. Chromatic groups are far and away the most common groups, being sometimes just a tiny subset of every sentience, a few strangers who have no reason to be in the same place at the same time, but are.

Depending how Mary is introduced, she could have a very different experience. Under most circumstances, however Robert is introduced, Mary will be at least polite back. The various Roberts though are a different story. Introduced to the almost psychic Bob (11/7/4) he will be cautious of her and she will be polite back to him. If she is introduced to Rob she is sincere, but he is only polite back, and if she had met him as Bobby in school, Bobby would have been sincere to her, but she would have only been polite to him.

Let’s consider a second situation, where Mary meets a new group of people without Robert. This small group includes Suzanne, Jaques, and Darryl.

Jaques likes pretty much everyone, he trusts Mary, and she is affectionate back, but is cautious around Suzanne as she has an aversion to him. Darryl on the other hand, disapproves of both Mary and Suzanne, and they are distrusting or disapproving back, but he thinks affectionately of Jaques, who is only polite back. Suzanne is very much the outsider, disapproving, distrusting or having an aversion to all the others.

Social Ordeal Actions

In T13 there is no limit to what sort of social actions you can make, but there is a list that should get you started. On the Table below you will see Types of Actions available, along with the suggested Facets that they should use for those Actions, as well as a Description of what is likely to occur. In general, Social Actions will always impact both Characters, altering their Current Impressions of each other away from the Zeroth Impression each time.

Social Ordeal Actions
TypeImpressionReactionSuggested FacetsDescription
Advise-2 to +20Craft, Dominion, Orthodox, Sin, Virtue, Wyrd, ZealGiving someone advice is a double-edged sword, if the advice works for them, then they will have done whatever they wanted to accomplish, and while they may have a positive impression of you, they are unlikely to really remember your contribution to their success, whereas if you give bad advice, then you will never hear the end of it or the negative impression they have of you because of it. Under rare circumstances advice given to the Target may be not acted upon, but appreciated, this can lead to the most positive outcome from the advisor’s position, the “I should have taken your advice”.
Agree+10Nature, Orthodox, ZealAgreeing to something the Target has offered has an immediate positive effect on the Target’s impression of you. Which can be used to renegotiate later.
Annoy-20Fury, Jeer, Liberty, Sin, TrialA deliberate attempt to create a negative opinion and attitude in a Target, often for petty reasons, but occasionally as a more complex deception.
Apologize-1 to +3-1Awe, Burden, Craft, Dominion, Gossamer, Heresy, Inertia, Orthodox, Phoenix, Rook, VirtueApologizing is usually a very positive action, as long as the target has a negative impression, but has not decided to attack you instead of listening. An apology when you have done nothing wrong will usually be received negatively.
Argue-3 to +3-2 to +2Craft, Fury, Liberty, Orthodox, Rook, Sin, Trial, Virtue, ZealArguing, is a complex mixture of Debate, Convincing, Persuasion, Agreement and Disagreement that combines into a powerful positive, negative or neutral effect depending what is being argued over and with whom.
Ask a Favour+10Burden, Dominion, Inertia, Quiet, Virtue, WyrdAsking someone to do you a small favour that is difficult to say no to is surprisingly often a good way to create a positive impression, as it demonstrates a trusting nature. Of course, this can go wrong with the Target taking advantage of the favour or situation, but if the favour is small enough it will usually be accepted.
Assess0-1 to +1Burden, Key, Quiet, Rook, YonderA quick glance can be enough to assess a Target, perhaps tell whether they are lying or telling the truth, how much they might be worth, how good they might be in a fight, or what their allegiances may be.
Befriend+3+1Awe, Dominion, Gossamer, Nature, Quiet, Rook, Virtue, Wyrd, ZealAn open attempt to create a favourable impression that is intended to lead to a deeper relationship or alliance. This can be altruistic, or manipulative as required.
BetraySpecial-2Awe, Dominion, Fury, Gossamer, Nature, Orthodix, Phoenix, Quiet, Sin, Trial, Virtue, WyrdBetrayal is usually a an extreme action, it can move a Character from whatever positive position they have to the negative equivalent for a cost of one Successs or Failure Level. This can allow Violent hatred to instantly become Kinship, or vice-versa.
Blackmail-5-5Awe, Dominion, Enigma, Gossamer, Heresy, Inertia, Key, Sin, TrialBlackmail is a form of corruption where you find out someone’s secrets and then threaten them with exposure (by releasing evidence to bosses, loved ones, police or press) if the Target does not do what you want (which is usually handing over large sums of cash). Blackmail attempts create an immediate negative impression, but if you have good evidence (or powerful enough accusations and lies) then you get what you want. See also “Secret keeping” though.
Bluff-1-1Awe, Dominion, Enigma, Heresy, Jeer, Quiet, Sin, YonderA deception method that involves making the Target believe something to be true that is not. This is often done by presenting a strong front with little to back it up. A bluff is usually only negative if the Character finds out it was a bluff, but a bluffer may lose respect for someone who is easily bluffed.
Boo-2 to target, +1 with other Booers.-1Fury, Inertia, Jeer, Miasma, Trial, Yonder, ZealBooing, jeering and heckling is a negative experience for those who are on the receiving end generally. However, those who boo together will bond slightly having a positive reaction to each other over all.
Bore-1 to 0+1Burden, Craft, Gossamer, Inertia, Miasma, Nature, Orthodox, Quiet, Rook, Virtue, ZealBoring the Target will generally create a Neutral or mildly Negative impression. Boring someone does not generally create violence, which can be useful, however the person doing the boring will often feel more positive about the person they bored.
Brag+1 to +4 First Time hearing, -1 for each subsequent time hearing+1Awe, Burden, Dominion, Gossamer, Heresy, Key, Nature, Orthodox, Sin, Trial, YonderBragging is boasting specifically about some accomplishment, usually as a result of pride in that accomplishment. Bragging aggrandizes the speaker, which can have a slightly positive impact on those listening if it is the first time they have heard the story, but if this brag has been heard before by the Target (or is too similar to another brag you have made) then it will be perceived negatively. For the braggard listening to their brags will give them a positive reaction.
Bribery-5 to +2 varies by ethics and economics0Burden, Dominion, Enigma, Miasma, SinBribery is paying someone to do something they are not supposed to do. You might bribe a trade envoy into agreeing to an unfavourable trade deal, or bribe a city councillor into rezoning an area of the city you own for redevelopment. Bribery is one specific form of corruption and as long as the Target is receptive to the bribe it will create a positive impression. Judging how receptive the Target will be is often really just a question of working out how big a bribe is necessary. Try and bribe someone with too little and you will create an immediate negative impression. Of course, some people are genuinely insulted by any attempted bribe.
Charm+4 to -1 varies+2Awe, Dominion, Enigma, Gossamer, Heresy, Jeer, Liberty, Nature, Quiet, Sin, Virtue, WyrdAn attempt to create a more positive impression. Charm can be natural, which is usually universally positively received or trained, which can appear forced and create a mildly negative impression. However, trying to Charm someone will always result in you gaining a hgiher opinion of the person you are charming.
Chat+1 to -1 by circumstance+1 to -1 by circumstanceAwe, Dominion, Gossamer, Jeer, Liberty, Nature, Orthodox, Rook, Yonder, ZealChatting is a generally positive experience for everyone involved, although it can become negative if the Target is pressed for time, or is trying to keep a secret.
Cheer-on+3+1 reaction to cheering also applies to other cheerers.Awe, Dominion, Fury, Gossamer, Heresy, Inertia, Jeer, Phoenix, Trial, Yonder, ZealCheering someone on is generally a positive experience for both the cheerer and the cheered. Being cheered has a positive effect on the Target, and joining in cheering has a positive interaction with everyone else who is cheering.
Co-operate+1 to +4 depending+1Craft, Dominion, Nature, Quiet, Rook, Virtue, ZealDoing what the Target wants you to do, whether from altruism, aligned interests, or coercion actually has a generally positive effect upon both you and the Target. Of course, forced cooperation is not as great an impact as finding some common ground, but it still improves relations between you slightly.
CommandGenerally 0, may be as low as -5 depending upon the command.+1Awe, Burden, Dominion, Fury, Gossamer, Virtue, YonderA command is an authoritative order or demand that is generally Neutral, but may be negative in nature, depending upon the command issued. However a commander will come to trust those they command in time.
Compliment-2 to +2 depending upon circumstance+1Awe, Craft, Dominion, Gossamer, Heresy, Key, Nature, Orthodox, YonderSaying something nice about the Target, such as liking their clothes, hair or behaviour can have an instant positive effect on the Target. However, in some cases the Target may be not take the compliment well, perhaps because they did not want to be wearing those clothes, have that haircut etc, or some other reason, when this happens the impression created or effect will be negative.
Confide-3 to +2 depending+1 to -1Craft, Dominion, Enigma, Key, Liberty, Orthodox, Quiet, ZealConfiding in the target, and telling them your secrets is a good way to build trust and create a positive impression with a positive action. However, this can go wrong if the target is shocked or outraged by the information confided in them.
Congratulate+2 to -5 depending0Awe, Burden, Dominion, Gossamer, Inertia, Orthodox, Rook, Virtue, ZealAcknowledging someone’s accomplishments is generally a positive effect, at least as long as they did accomplish that thing, or did want to accomplish that thing, if they didn’t then you may give the Target a very negative impression.
Convince0 to -2 dependingCraft, Dominion, Heresy, Inertia, Key, Orthodox, Phoenix, Quiet, Trial, WyrdConvincing is an attempt to change someone’s mind by application of logic, reason, evidence and argument. Whilst it can be used on anyone, it works best on those who are Neutral, rather than already decided against.
Cruel+1 to -5 dependingDominion, Fury, Jeer, Key, Miasma, Nature, Phoenix, Sin, Trial, Wyrd, ZealBeing cruel to your Target, such as enjoying their punishment, pain or torment, is always a negative impression builder, unless the Target is a masochist or similar. Truly cruel actions deliberately and wilfully cause pain, distress and suffering to the Target while delighting or amusing yourself or some observer, this is not just some severity or strictness, this is a malediction of sorts.
Debate0 to -1 depending0 to -1Craft, Gossamer, Inertia, Key, Orthodox, Quiet, Rook, Trial, Wyrd, ZealDebating is arguing and discussing a specific topic, usually disputed between the Target and yourself. Debate is generally considered a Neutral action, although good arguments may persuade and win the debate, they may also cause negative consequences as well.
Demand0 to -1 depending-1 to 0 dependingAwe, Burden, Dominion, Fury, Inertia, Miasma, Nature, Phoenix, Rook, Sin, Trial, Wyrd, ZealA demand is a usually neutral or negatively perceived command or order, demands are usually urgent and may be made with the proper authority, but usually overstepping some boundary creates a negative impression.
Direct0 to +2 depending+1Craft, Dominion, Gossamer, Liberty, Trial, WyrdDirecting the target is a form of command, usually performed with gestures or by simple language. Directing a target is usually neutral or positive (unless you are directing people into danger or something). Directions are always received positively if they have been specifically requested by the target (“Excuse me, can you tell me where the library is?””)
Disagree-3 to +2-1 to +1Craft, Heresy, Nature, Orthodox, Trial, ZealDisagreeing with the Target will usually have an immediate negative effect on the Target, however some people will find that refreshing and it give a positive impression.
Discourage00Dominion, Enigma, Fury, Jeer, Key, Miasma, Sin, Trial, Virtue, ZealDiscouraging someone is usually a negative effect, however it usually creates a neutral impression rather than negative, as the discouragement is usually seen as coming from a positive place.
Double Bluff-2 to -4 when discovered-1Dominion, Enigma, Heresy, Jeer, Orthodox, YonderA deception method that involves making the Target believe something is not true, when it is. This is usually done by presenting the truth in an unbelievable manner.
Elicit Information+1 to +30 to +1Enigma, Jeer, Key, Nature, Orthodox, Quiet, YonderEliciting information is about showing an interest in the Target, and rather than asking direct and specific questions, is more about encouraging the Target to talk about themselves, their plans, interests and problems on their own. This sort of elicitation is also known as “Being a Good Listener”, and is generally perceived positively.
Encourage-1 to +3 depending+1Awe, Burden, Dominion, Enigma, Gossamer, Inertia, Jeer, Key, Orthodox, Phoenix, Rook, Virtue, ZealEncouraging someone to do something is a positive experience for them, if they want to do it, otherwise results may vary.
Entertain+1 to +5 depending0Awe, Craft, Gossamer, Jeer, Liberty, Nature, ZealEntertaining a Target can be attempted in any number of ways, from conversation to performance arts. Usually the Target will react positively, unless they are scared of clowns or some other unfortunate complication.
Explain-1 to +1 often 00Dominion, Heresy, Key, Orthodox, Quiet, ZealExplaining a situation or thing is usually a Neutral effect upon the Target. Although, in rare circumstances this exposition can be blamed (a case of “shoot the messenger”), it is usually a positive effect for the Target and creates a positive impression of you.
Flatter+3 to -2 depending+1Awe, Burden, Craft, Dominion, Heresy, Key, Miasma, Orthodox, SinAn attempt to please another and create a positive impression by making complimentary remarks. Flattery works best when the compliments are perceived as sincere, but insincere praise will quickly create a negative impression. Flattery can be exceptional persuasive on some people, especially those suffering from vanity or naivety.
Flirt+2 to +5 depending+1 to +3 dependingAwe, Dominion, Fury, Gossamer, Heresy, Liberty, Nature, Phoenix, Sin, ZealFlirting is a deliberate attempt to create a favourable impression by acting amorously or toying with the Target’s emotions. Flirting is not usually intended to be taken seriously, although it may lead to more serious relationships.
Gossip+1 to -1 depending0Dominion, Gossamer, Heresy, Key, Rook, Trial, Yonder, ZealGossip is simply sharing news and stories with the Target. Usually gossiping is a Neutral event that may generate a slightly negative impression, but amongst gossips it usually creates a more positive impression.
Grovel+2 to 0-1Burden, Enigma, Gossamer, Heresy, Inertia, Miasma, Quiet, Rook, Virtue, WyrdGrovelling is when you humiliate yourself for the Target’s enjoyment. Grovelling will usually result in the Target not choosing to punish you too much further for whatever slight they have imagined or sustained. Grovelling for your life is quite likely to work, as the Target will no longer see you as a threat that must be dealt with.
Honesty+3 to -2 depending-1 dependingInertia, Key, Orthodox, Quiet, VirtueHonesty, usually in the sense of answering questions truthfully and without holding information back, is usually considered a positive effect. However, sometimes such honesty can be blunt and may therefore cause a negative impression on the Target, especially if these blunt truths are delivered sincerely.
Humiliate-2 to -5 depending-1 to -3 dependingDominion, Enigma, Fury, Heresy, Jeer, Key, Miasma, Orthodox, Phoenix, QuietHumiliating your Target is a quick way to a negative impression, whether through insults, revelations about previous misdeeds, or through pranks or jokes at their expense (although sometimes they will see the funny side) however it will establish you positively with the Target’s Rivals and Enemies.
Ignore0 to -20Awe, Enigma, Heresy, Inertia, Jeer, Miasma, Quiet, RookAny attempt to completely ignore the target is usually a negative impression builder, although actually only a neutral action, any negative reaction is easily removed by apologizing.
Insult-3 to -5 generally-1 generally +1 on others nearbyDominion, Fury, Heresy, Jeer, Key, Miasma, Orthodox, Phoenix, Quiet, SinUsually an insult is a Curse, Lecture, or Bedlam Psych attack that is intended to Distract, humiliate or ridicule the Target. This will usually have a negative effect on the Target, but may have a positive effect on others nearby, some people consider a good insult a positive effect though so be warned.
Intimidate-2 to -4 depending-1 to +1 dependingAwe, Burden, Fury, Gossamer, Inertia, Nature, Quiet, Trial, YonderAn attempt to compel someone to do something through a threat, or imagined threat, of some sort, usually physical violence. Intimidating another Character can often give the intimidator
Introductions+1+1Awe, Dominion, Heresy, Inertia, Orthodox, Virtue, WyrdIntroducing yourself to a bunch of strangers is usually considered positively, of course some circumstances may make this negative, such as trying to introduce yourself to paranoid schizophrenics or xenophobes. Introducing others to your friends is also a positive action, that creates a positive impression in everyone involved (usually).
Jest+2 to -2 depending+1 to -1 dependingDominion, Gossamer, Jeer, Key, Liberty, Quiet, ZealHumour, whether quick one-liner, snappy comeback, or clever pun, demonstrates a quick wit and usually creates an immediate positive impression. Humour though is an exceptionally personal thing and you must know your audience well to tell a well-judged joke, if you make an incorrect presumption about the Target then you may give a very negative impression.
Lecture+1 to -5 depending upon Woundage-1Craft, Dominion, Key, Orthodox, QuietIn T13 Lectures are type of attack, so it is probably no surprise that lecturing someone generally creates a negative perception of you. Lectures can be positive things, but the Target will rarely build a positive impression of the Lecturer, except perhaps years later when they come to appreciate their lecturer. Lecturing represents an obsolete teaching style that implies everyone must learn the same way, and this is quick to create negative effects in some pupils.
Lie+1 to -5 depending+1 to -2 dependingCraft, Dominion, Heresy, Liberty, Miasma, Rook, SinLying is a direct deception, which may be intended to protect (a white lie), mislead or deceive the Target. However, if discovered lies cause negative impacts, usually regardless of the reasons.
Listen-2 to +3 depending upon target and openess-1 to +3Dominion, Gossamer, Inertia, Key, Quiet, YonderJust listening to someone talk and nodding or making agreement noises can be an effective way of gaining information and making friends. Listening and paying attention to people is generally seen as positive. Although, eavesdropping and listening into conversations that you are not a part can be seen in a very negative light.
Manipulate-5 to +5 depending-2 to +2 dependingDominion, Enigma, Gossamer, Sin, ZealManipulation is a very subtle form of persuasion that over time will accomplish your goals, but is rarely quick to enact. Manipulation is usually perceived positively at the time, until the target realises that they have been manipulated, when a negative impression will be immediately formed at least equal to the positive one previously formed.
Mannered-2 to +2 depending upon cultural similarity.-2 to +2 depending upon cultural similarityDominion, Orthodox, Quiet, Rook, VirtueBeing polite and well-mannered are almost always considered a positive effect and create a positive impression, as long as both parties share cultural understandings of what good manners are. Post-Apocalyptic Punks might have a very different polite greeting to medieval knights, and both may find the other’s offensive.
Mediate-2 to +2 depending upon bias+2 to -2 depending upon biasBurden, Craft, Gossamer, Quiet, Rook, Trial, WyrdIn order to mediate there must be two parties for you to act as the mediator. Mediators carry messages, translate information, and negotiate on another’s behalf as required. Mediation is usually seen as a positive effect and creates a positive impression for both sides, as long as they do not display any significant bias. The moment you display bias of any sort against one of the parties that party will immediately form a negative impression of you.
Mimicking-3 to +2 depending-1 to +1 dependingCraft, Dominion, Heresy, Jeer, Key, Trial, YonderAn attempt to gain a positive impression from some, by creating a negative impression in the target of the mimickery. Often used to mock the target and draw attention to their negative traits, although it can be used to draw attention to their positive traits instead, however this form does not create positive impressions in the target still, but can create positive impressions in others of both the target and the mimic.
Mirror+1 or rarely -1+1 or rarely -1Awe, Craft, Dominion, Enigma, Heresy, Inertia, Jeer, Key, Quiet, Rook, YonderA technique that increases a Target’s positive impression by subtly mimicking their body language and speech patterns, must be employed secretly or unconsciously as conscious copying is often seen negatively.
Mislead+2 falls to -1+1 falls to -2Awe, Dominion, Enigma, Gossamer, Heresy, Jeer, Quiet, Trial, Virtue, Wyrd, YonderA complex technique that can create a short term positive impression or opinion, but generally does not have too bad negative consequences, or relies on you being long gone by the time the consequences are revealed.
NegotiateUsually -1, 0 or +1Usually -1, 0 or +1Burden, Dominion, Gossamer, Key, Orthodox, Quiet, Rook, Trial, WyrdNegotiations are usually a back and forth of offer and counter-offer. A bad offer will be perceived negatively, a good offer positive, generally, most balanced offers should be Neutral though.
Observe0 to -2 depending+2 to -2 dependingKey, Quiet, YonderObserving the Target without otherwise interacting, and without them becoming aware of the observation, or being distracted by another social interaction with someone else, can reveal aspects of their character (especially large Hitches often) that may be useful in deciding what else to do. However, being observed, and realising it, is usually a negative experience for the Target, and allows them to mislead you in response. Careful observation with paralanguage understanding can even reveal the exact action that they are engaged in.
Offer+6 to -6 depending upon offer+1 to -1 depending upon acceptanceBurden, Dominion, Gossamer, Liberty, Nature, Phoenix, Virtue, WyrdOffering the target something (care for a drink?) is usually seen as positive, although this does depend upon the offer. Offering terms for surrender will not go down well if they are winning the fight, and offering something negative (Surrender, I promise, I’ll make the execution painless…) is at best a neutral action.
Omit+2 to -2 depending, potentially -5 if discovered0 to -2 dependingCraft, Dominion, Enigma, Heresy, Jeer, QuietNot revealing a single piece of information, while spouting other information, so that it is not obvious that anything has been left out is an impressive skill that based on the information revealed may have a positive or negative effect as desired, usually though if the omission is ever discovered by the target then they will immediately suffer a powerful negative impression of you.
Order+2 to 0 depending upon order-1 to +2 depending upon executionAwe, Burden, Craft, Dominion, Fury, Gossamer, Miasma, Nature, Orthodox, Wyrd, ZealAn order is often an arrangement, that is given to the Target and that they are expected to fulfil for some reward, or out of continued loyalty. Orders are generally Neutral or positive in nature, in comparison with a command.
ParalanguageModify +/-4 on failure upto -5+2Craft, Dominion, Enigma, Gossamer, Heresy, Orthodox, Quiet, Wyrd, ZealParalanguage is an advanced technique, layered on top of one of the other Actions that involves modifying the words used to include local dialectual variants, as well as body language, posture, accent, voice quality, pitch, rhythm and tone to modify the original message to make it be received more positively or more negatively as desired. The problems are that Paralanguage is difficult to perform without a lot of knowledge of local cultural factors, to the point that even many locals will avoid its use, as it can create extremely negative impressions if performed incorrectly, where it may be seen as mockery or even a Psych Attack. Additionally, any use of of paralanguage demands good rapport with the target, automatically increasing your Impression of them, as you understand them better.
Persuade0 to -2 depending+1 to -1 dependingDominion, Fury, Gossamer, Heresy, Inertia, Liberty, Miasma, Phoenix, Rook, Virtue, ZealPersuasion is an attempt to change someone’s mind by advice and urging, it can only be successful if the Target has a good impression of you, and can often cost one or both of you an Impression level or two in the process
Play+2 to -5 per game depending+2 to -5 per game dependingBurden, Craft, Inertia, Jeer, Liberty, Nature, Trial, ZealPlaying with someone (joining them in a game, playing a game with them, joining in their fun, etc) is usually seen as a positive effect and creates a positive impression. However, winning or losing too much, betting too heavily, taking things too seriously, cheating, extreme tactics, being a poor winner (gloating) or poor loser (whinging) can all create negative impressions very quickly if you are not careful.
Punish-2 to +1 depending upon “fairness”, respect and trust+1 to -1 dependingBurden, Fury, Jeer, Miasma, Trial, WyrdPunishing is usually a negative impression building action, few people are drawn to their punisher. Although, under the correct circumstances a positive (usually respect based) relationship may grow between punished and punisher, especially if the punishment is fair and well-judged. Some people may gain a positive impression of the punisher if they are strict, but fair, for example, but this is usually not the case.
Question+2 to -3 depending upon question+3 to -4 depending upon answerEnigma, Gossamer, Jeer, Key, Orthodox, Quiet, Wyrd, YonderAsking questions can have a usually Neutral or Negative effect, depending upon the questions asked. If based upon finding out more about the Target’s interests, likes, hobbies and passions then this displayed interest will have a positive effect upon the Target. Asking questions can have a more profound reaction on the questioner when they find out the answers to some questions.
Recommend-2 to +1 depending0Dominion, Inertia, Liberty, Miasma, Orthodox, Virtue, ZealRecommending something to the target is usually a neutral action (although it does depend upon what you are recommending), if asked to make a recommendation and you do and it is enjoyed, then this is a Positive impression maker. Bad recommendations quickly create a negative impression, though so be warned.
Renegotiate-5 to +2 depending on changes-3 to +3 depending upon resultBurden, Craft, Dominion, Inertia, Liberty, Miasma, Rook, Sin, TrialAn attempt to alter the arrangements of an earlier negotiation usually to improve the circumstances of the deal for yourself. As such renegotiations are usually perceived negatively. Renegotiation can be neutrally or even positively perceived if there has been some noteworthy change of circumstance.
Repress0 usually -1 if already suspicious (-2) or worse0 usually -1 if pressedAwe, Dominion, Enigma, Inertia, Liberty, Miasma, RookWhen you try to hold back information in your body language, facial expression and tone, from the Target, to avoid giving any reaction away, is usually a Neutral action, although it can be negatively perceived if the Target is already suspicious.
Secret-keeping+4 to -5 depending-3 to +4 depending upon secretEnigma, Inertia, Quiet, Rook, WyrdKeeping somebody’s secrets for them, can have create a positive impression as the Target sees you as trustworthy and loyal to them in some way. Being told a secret also has a reaction based on the nature of the secret. Of course, it can be a difficult balance to remind someone of your secret-keeper situation, without it appearing as blackmail. Successful blackmail can sometimes be emotional interpreted as secret-keeping, and vice versa for unsuccessful secret-keeping.
Seduce+4 to -4 depending+2 to -2 dependingAwe, Craft, Dominion, Fury, Gossamer, Heresy, Inertia, Liberty, Miasma, Nature, Phoenix, Sin, ZealSeduction is a temptation that is offered to the Target, often an offer of sexual intercourse, although actually any temptation away from one’s duty, principles, faith, or allegiance is also a seduction. The Temptation is often alluring, and flattering itself, but the offer alone is usually a positive effect on the Target, although a few highly chaste and principled characters may be negatively impacted by the attempt. Seduction has an emotional reaction on the seducer, for example a rejection may sting, but create a more positive impression, but the opposite scenario need not create an opposite result.
Sincerity+2 to -2 depending upon alignmentUsually 0Enigma, Liberty, Nature, Orthodox, Quiet, Rook, Virtue, Wyrd, ZealSincerity is often described as a freedom from deceit and hypocrisy, and this is true, but it is more about your words and actions aligning with your feelings about something. Sincerity does grant a generally positive impression, however if your sincere feelings do not match those of the Target, then they are more likely to create a negative effect or impression.
Suggestion+1 to +3 usually occasionally -1 to -3 when opposed0 usually, -1 to -2 when opposedAwe, Craft, Dominion, Enigma, Miasma, Quiet, Virtue, Wyrd, YonderSuggesting something is usually seen as a positive action and creates a positive impression. The only times this is not true is if the target already has an idea what they want and is not interested in your suggestion, or if they are opposed to your suggestion for some reason (try suggesting eating peanut butter to someone with a peanut allergy for a personal example).
Taunt-3 to -7 depending upon taunt-1 to -2 depending upon Taunt usedFury, Gossamer, Jeer, Miasma, Phoenix, TrialA taunt is a deliberate action, usually creating a very negative impression, often to provoke a specific reaction from the Target. Using a taunt usually causes the reaction of a negative impression, that is affected by the Taunt used.
Teach0 to +3 usually+1 UsuallyCraft, Enigma, Heresy, Orthodox, Quiet, ZealTeaching and instructing someone is generally a Neutral or Positive experience. Of course, some teachers are boring, or quick to lecture rather than teach, but a true mentor will teach in way compatible with the Target’s learning style and will grant an overall positive experience.
Tease+2 to -4 depending+1 to 0 UsuallyAwe, Enigma, Gossamer, Heresy, Inertia, Jeer, Liberty, Nature, Phoenix, Sin, Trial, ZealTeasing ranges from exciting someone without gratifying them, which can give a fairly positive impression, through to bullying, harassment, or tormenting, irritation and provocations which are intended to be negative.
Tell Anecdote+2 to -1 depending upon anecdote suitability+1 to -1 depending upon reactionGossamer, Heresy, Inertia, Jeer, Orthodox, Quiet, Yonder, ZealTelling your version of some event can have a positive effect on people, causing them to relax, laugh and empathise with you. A poor choice of anecdote and misreading the crowd’s initial reactions can have a negative result however.
Trickery+4 to -3 depending0 to +1Craft, Dominion, Enigma, Heresy, Jeer, Liberty, Miasma, Sin, TrialTrickery is using deception and skilled techniques to create a positive impression, sometimes the trickery can involve showing a magic trick to someone, leaving a lasting impression although not always a positive one, although trickery can also be used in more direct and negative impression causing ways.
Two-faced+1 usually-1 usuallyDominion, Enigma, Heresy, Jeer, Liberty, Miasma, Sin, TrialTwo-faced interactions are a form of deception where you modify your behaviour around the target to give them a usually positive impression, while to other people you indicate you have a negative impression of the target to others to increase their positive impressions.
Whimsy+1 to -2 depending (often towards 0)+1 if well receivedJeer, Liberty, Nature, VirtueWhimsy whether in the form of erratic humour, fanciful imagination, or a general playfulness is an interesting social technique. While it can be perceived negatively, it usually causes to user to become ignored, or even feared and avoided, rather than hated and attacked, however whimsy is never considered professional and using it will have negative consequences in serious situations.

Social Ordeals can create Psych Effects, Wound Characters, and move a Character in Psychosocial spaces. In fact, Social Ordeal Levels are a Psychosocial Action Space that manages the network of interactions between Characters. With a Success Level improving the Impression, and a Failure Level reducing the current Impression (typically, it is usually assumed that you want people to like you). However, Social exchanges can move a Character in multiple Psychosocial Spaces simultaneously. It should also be noted that although a Social Ordeal Action specifies that it can improve an Impression by +5 Levels, this would usually require 5 Success or Failure Levels to achieve, although Yarn-Tellers, Players and Referees can agree that for example a single Blackmail Success or Failure could have a -5 Level effect this would be unusual, as usually the Blackmail effect itself could require the Success Levels to not be dismissed as a joke.

Social Ordeals in Diverse Psychosocial Action Spaces

In T13 Characters are complex beings, not only is a Character a person, who has a (admittedly imagined) physical existence, but they also have a Psychosocial existence that is largely unconnected to their physical form. Sure, when they are awake, focused and performing complex physical tasks then they are perhaps completely connected to their physical existence, but the moment they remember a memory, think about a lover, or have a conversation with another Character, they are making Actions in a Psychosocial space. Now every Character has their own mindscape, which is their unique Psychosocial space. In T13, this Psychosocial space can be explored, delved into, so we can learn more about Characters by exploring their mindscapes, where the Character’s inner-self can move around inside their own mindscape.

This isn’t perhaps as strange a concept as you may think. Our conscious mind, may focus on our perceptions, emotions and feelings while we watch a film, then think about the ramifications while chatting with friends, moving to memory to recall specific scenes or lines that were watched, and perhaps into daydreams and fantasies that are conjured in the imagination as the friend suggests another way the movie could have gone. These are all movement within the Psychosocial Action Space of the Character’s mindscape.

There’s more going on than just what the Character is experiencing in their own mindscape, after all each other Character is moving around in their own mindscape while experiencing the physical world as well (also simulated in the game). Simultaneously each Character’s Impressions are constantly altering, and there will be additional Psychosocial Action Spaces that the Characters may also be working through, such as within their workplace social structure, or through mindgames the Villain is playing with them.

Mindscapes and Eidolons

Within a mindscape (or any similar Psychosocial Spaces) you will encounter a genius loci for that space that is known as the Eidolon. For a Character their Eidolon is a representation of the Character’s Gestalt (the sum of all their Alts and mental figments), this means that while the Eidolon contains an aspect of the Character’s inner-self, it is not directly controlled by that inner-self. Think of the Eidolon of a Psychosocial space as almost a Dungeonmaster character, who builds and maintains the Psychosocial Space, and typically has reasons for keeping aspects of themelves apart, such as not allowing their inner-self access to their own traumatic memories. The Eidolon is both the Character and the mindscape they inhabit, and has different goals and objectives to any of the individual components of the Character.

Within the Psychosocial Space that the Eidolon controls, it is usually considered the most powerful being, often having an aspect of a lesser Divinity, exactly like a “real” space may have a “real” Genius-Loci, which is effectively a “small-god” or lesser divinity, or a time period may have a zeitgeist, or spirit of the age. Eidolons can be confused, misdirected, hidden from and overpowered occasionally, especially by Characters such as powerful Psychics, other lesser and greater Divinities or Demonic entities, but such effects should be difficult to achieve (or be important to the Plot, I guess). Eidolons are typically considered to be a Super-Value version of the Character within their own Psychosocial Space, but can be calculated as a full Gestalt if required (although the full Gestalt will normally have a lower power-level than the assumed Super-Value normally). More complex Psychosocial Spaces may include Eidolons that represent the full Gestalt personality of every member of the Pact or Space. Such Eidolons are best thought of as a collective spirit, patron deity, or similar rather than as an actual Character.

UbergeistUbergeist Eidolons behave as true divinities within their Psychosocial Space. Such Eidolons have powerful personalities that are often the result of Alt personalities melding their Mindscapes into enormous Psychosocial realms.Ubergeist Eidolons have Personalities that are made of all available Facets as either a Persona, Core, Resolved Hitch, or Monster Facet as required or wanted.
PersonaPersona Eidolons have a personality, usually this Personality is not the same Persona as the Internal-Self of the Eidolon, but is often the Facet of the Character’s largest Facet instead.Persona Eidolons are known for having a Personality, this makes them Characters with their own motivations and drives, which can complicate the Psychosocial Space in interesting ways.
Genius LociGenius Loci Eidolons are the spirits of a Psychosocial Space, they are generally not technically aware, and have no rigid personality, but they may behave in person like ways from time to time.Genius Loci Eidolons are usually neutral although they may turn aggressive if threatened.
AnimalisticAnimalistic Eidolons are quite common in most Characters. Often a specific totem animal represents the Eidolon, which may appear through out the Psychosocial Space in some form, for example as a Chesire Cat like entity, or as towering statues.Animalistic Eidolons usually reflect the animal in temperament and intelligence, most are not truly sentient, but they will act to defend themselves and their Psychosocial Space.
SleepingSleeping Eidolons are usually unaware of events within their Psychosocial Space, they are effectively asleep. However if Characters within the Psychosocial Space become too agitated, or noisy, then the Sleeping Eidolon will awaken to deal with the situation as quickly and often grumpily as possible.Sleeping Eidolons are notable only for their power levels when they awaken, which can vary wildly. Some will behave more like Personas when awake, others will simply disrupt and attack the source of agitation.

Social Ordeal Levels

The Impressions are one continuous aspect of all Social Ordeal Psychosocial Action Spaces. In a Psychosocial Action Space that holds multiple people and how they interact with each other, the Lines that connect the Characters are each holding that Character’s Impressions of each other. These Impressions are actually only one aspect of what we call the Social Ordeal Level. Each Level has an Impression associated, a name for that Type of Level, a description of what that means, and the most likely results of a social exchange with a Character that holds this Impression of you.

Typically altering a Character’s impression of you by a Social Ordeal Level requires at least one Success or Failure Level. However moving more than one Impression Level is possible with additional Success or Failure Levels. Typically the number of Success or Failure Levels Reduced will indicate a suitable number of Impression Levels. This means that for two brothers with a Kinship Impression of each other to come to actual Violence Social Ordeal Level within one exchange would norally require 131 Success or Failure Levels.
